How AI Overviews works
AI Overviews uses Google's Gemini model to generate a summarized answer based on content retrieved from multiple indexed web pages. It appears at the top of search results for queries where Google determines a synthesized answer would be useful.
The feature includes links to the sources used in the summary, giving cited pages additional visibility.
Does AI Overviews use special ranking signals?
Google has stated that the same SEO fundamentals that apply to classic search remain relevant for AI Overviews. There are no additional technical requirements and no special schema.org markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
What matters is the same as in traditional SEO: helpful, accurate, well-structured content from credible, attributable sources.
AI Overviews vs AI Mode
AI Overviews appears inline within standard Google Search results for selected queries.

What AI Overviews does not guarantee
Appearing in AI Overviews does not guarantee a click. Studies have shown that AI Overview responses can reduce click-through rates for queries where the summary fully answers the question. Optimizing for AI Overviews requires balancing visibility with content that encourages users to visit the source for more detail.
